How to Clean a Baratza Encore Grinder

The Baratza Encore is a popular choice for home brewers due to its excellent grind consistency and durability. However, like any coffee grinder, the Encore requires regular cleaning to maintain its performance and ensure that your coffee tastes its best. In this article, I’ll walk you through the steps for cleaning your Baratza Encore grinder, explain how to tell when it’s time for a cleaning, and provide some tips for keeping your grinder in top shape.

Cleaning Tools and Supplies

To clean your Baratza Encore grinder, you’ll need a few basic tools and supplies:

  • A small brush (a toothbrush or paintbrush works well)
  • A damp cloth
  • Grinder cleaning tablets (optional)

You may also want to have a can of compressed air on hand to help remove any stubborn debris or coffee grounds from hard-to-reach places. For more general grinder cleaning tips, see our grinder cleaning overview:

Baratza Encore Cleaning Steps

Cleaning your Baratza Encore is relatively straightforward. Here are the steps you need to take to keep your grinder in tip-top shape.

Step 1: Unplug Your Grinder and Remove the Hopper

Before you begin cleaning your Baratza Encore, make sure to unplug it from the power source to avoid any accidents. Once it’s unplugged, remove the hopper by twisting it counterclockwise until it comes off. If there are any beans left in the hopper, empty them out and set them aside. Sometimes beans get trapped at the bottom of the hopper, so make sure to check in the area around the burrs too.

Step 2: Clean the Grind Catching Bin

This is an easy step. I wash the grind bin in warm soapy water and let it air dry overnight. It’s absolutely essential that you let the grind bin dry before you reattach it to your grinder. Any residual moisture could get the inside of your grinder wet when it evaporates. Water is anathema to steel burrs and should be avoided at all costs.

Step 3: Remove the Burr and Clean the Chamber

Locate the burr at the bottom of the grinding chamber. To remove it, twist it counterclockwise until it comes loose. Once you’ve removed the burr, use a small brush (a toothbrush or small paintbrush works well) to sweep out any coffee grounds or debris from the grinding chamber. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, as coffee grounds can accumulate in hard-to-reach places.

Pro Tip

I like to turn my Encore upside down over a garbage can after my first pass with the brush. I find that there are often tons of grounds that come loose this way that I can't reach with the brush alone.

Step 4: Clean the Burr

Using your brush, gently scrub the surface of the burr to remove any coffee oils or residue. Never — and I mean NEVER — use water to clean your Encore’s burrs. Water can cause your burrs to rust, which will require purchasing replacement burrs to fix. Wiping the burrs down with a brush is more than enough to remove any buildup of old grounds or oils that accumulate.

Step 5: Reassemble Your Grinder

Once you’ve finished cleaning the burr and grinding chamber, it’s time to reassemble your grinder. Place the burr back into the chamber and twist it clockwise until it locks into place. Then, reattach the hopper by aligning it with the grinder and twisting it clockwise until it’s secure.

Step 6: Run a Cycle with Cleaning Tablets (optional)

Baratza recommends running a grind cycle with cleaning tablets to remove coffee oils and scrub the burrs clean. I don’t always do this step, but it is probably a good idea to do it a few times per year. I use the Urnex Grindz tablets, but you can use any similar tablets from other companies. I find the Urnex tablets don’t leave a nasty aftertaste like other tablets and are worth paying a slight premium for them.

How to Tell if Your Baratza Encore Needs Cleaning

There are a few signs that your Baratza Encore grinder may need cleaning:

  1. Your coffee tastes off. If your coffee tastes bitter, sour, or otherwise unpleasant, it may be a sign that your grinder needs cleaning. Coffee oils and residue can build up on the burrs and in the grinding chamber, affecting the taste of your coffee.
  2. Your grinder is making unusual noises. If your grinder starts making strange noises or seems to be working harder than usual, it may be a sign that it needs cleaning. Coffee grounds can get stuck in the burrs or grinding chamber, causing the motor to work harder and potentially leading to damage.
  3. It’s been a while since your last cleaning. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to clean your Baratza Encore grinder every few months, or more frequently if you use it heavily. Even if you don’t notice any signs of buildup or performance issues, regular cleaning can help to keep your grinder in top shape and ensure that your coffee always tastes its best.

Why Keeping Your Grinder Clean is Important

Cleaning your grinder regularly is important for a few reasons. First and foremost, it helps to ensure that your coffee tastes great. Coffee oils and residue can build up on the burrs and in the grinding chamber over time, affecting the flavor of your coffee. Regular cleaning helps to remove this buildup and keep your coffee tasting fresh and delicious.

In addition to improving flavor, regular cleaning can also help to extend the life of your grinder. Coffee grounds and debris can get stuck in the burrs or grinding chamber, causing the motor to work harder and potentially leading to damage over time. By cleaning your grinder regularly, you can help to prevent this buildup and keep your grinder running smoothly for years to come.

Finally, regular cleaning can make the larger, more thorough cleanings easier and less time-consuming. If you clean your grinder every few months, you’ll have less buildup to contend with each time, making the process quicker and easier. A little bit of daily maintenance, like brushing out the grinding chamber after each use, can go a long way towards keeping your grinder in top shape.

Tips for Keeping Your Grinder Clean

In addition to regular thorough cleanings, there are a few things you can do to keep your Baratza Encore grinder clean and in good working order. These tips can make your deep-cleaning sessions a little easier and help keep your grinder in good shape in general:

  1. Brush out the grinding chamber after each use. After you’ve finished grinding your coffee, use a small brush to sweep out any remaining grounds from the chamber. This will help to prevent buildup and make your regular cleanings easier.
  2. Store your grinder in a dry place. Moisture can cause coffee oils to go rancid and lead to buildup in your grinder. Make sure to store your grinder in a dry place, away from sources of moisture like sinks or steam.
  3. Use fresh, high-quality beans. Old or low-quality beans can contain more oils and leave more residue in your grinder. Using fresh, high-quality beans can help to minimize buildup and keep your grinder cleaner for longer. On a similar note, I usually avoid grinder super dark, oily beans in my Encore since they make a tremendous mess and make the grinder harder to clean than lighter roasts.

Wrapping Up

Cleaning your Baratza Encore grinder is an important part of maintaining its performance and ensuring that your coffee always tastes its best. By following the steps outlined in this article and performing regular cleanings every few months, you can keep your grinder in top shape and enjoy delicious, freshly-ground coffee for years to come.

Remember to unplug your grinder before cleaning, remove the hopper and burr, and use a small brush and damp cloth to clean the grinding chamber and burr. Running a cycle with white rice can help to remove any remaining oils or odors, and daily maintenance like brushing out the chamber after each use can help to minimize buildup over time.

With a little bit of care and attention, your Baratza Encore grinder will be a trusty companion on your coffee journey.
